braveONE is a mentorship program for kids and teens living with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). We connect them with young adult mentors who also live with T1D and truly “get it.” Our goal is to build real relationships, offer encouragement, and remind every kid they are not alone. 

• Mentees: Kids and teens, typically ages 5–17, living with T1D.

• Mentors: Young adults (18+) living with T1D who want to make a difference by walking alongside someone younger on a similar journey. 

We’re all about in-person, real-world connection. No webinars or lectures here. Instead, mentors and mentees hang out one-on-one—grabbing ice cream, going bowling, or even visiting each other’s schools. It’s about showing up in the everyday moments, not just the medical ones. 

We match based on shared experiences, interests, and personalities. We take time to get to know both the mentor and the mentee so the relationship is meaningful and lasting—not just a good fit on paper. 

Nope! While all of our mentors live with T1D and understand the daily ins and outs, braveONE is not a substitute for medical advice or treatment. We focus on emotional support, friendship, and lived experience.  

Mentors commit to a minimum of 6 months, with the hope of building a relationship that lasts even longer. We ask pairs to connect regularly, whether that's a quick ice cream outing, a weekend hangout, or a visit to school. Every pair is different, but consistency and presence matter most. 

We aim to operate nationwide, based on interest. If you’re in an area without an existing match, still reach out—we hope to expand and would love to hear from you.    

Getting started is easy! Just fill out one of our interest forms—whether you’re a parent of a potential mentee, a young adult looking to mentor, or someone who wants to volunteer and support the program in other ways. You’ll find all the forms on our website under the “Get Involved” section. Once we hear from you, we’ll be in touch with next steps!
